Homeowners Insurance Information

Mexico is a popular travel destination due to its close proximity to the United States, alluring sunny skies and sandy beaches. However, if you’re planning a trip to Mexico, there are a few things you should know. Not only do you have to book accommodations and decide on a travel plan, but you should also consider Mexico travel insurance to make sure you are covered during every step of your trip.

What is Mexico Travel Insurance and Do I Need It?

When you’re planning any trip out of the country, there are a few different insurance types you can get to protect yourself.

  • Travel health insurance: Provides medical coverage while traveling outside your home country because your domestic health insurance may provide limited or no coverage away from home. Includes some combination of the following:

  • Trip interruption: Helps cover expenses incurred in making necessary arrangements to return home earlier than planned due to certain circumstances such as the death of a close relative.

  • Emergency medical evacuation/repatriation: This coverage would make arrangements for necessary transportation to the closest medical facility where adequate care would be given if you were to become injured or seriously sick while on your trip. Once you are stable enough to travel, it may also pay for your return home.

  • Return of mortal remains:In the unfortunate event of your death while on your trip, this can pay for local cremation or transportation of mortal remains to your home country.

  • Accidental death and dismemberment:In case of death in an accident or the loss of one or more limbs, this policy would provide a lump sum benefit.

  • Additional benefits may include coverage for ID theft assistance, terrorism, natural disaster relief, return of minor children, etc.

  • Trip cancellation insurance: Provide coverage for prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs in case you need to cancel your trip for covered reasons. While on a trip, it may also cover emergency medical expenses, trip interruption, baggage and many other benefits.

  • Group travel insurance:For groups of five or more travelers traveling together with the same travel dates, group travel insurance plans provide the same coverage, but they are usually 10% cheaper. A single application can be completed for the entire group.

Travelers to Mexico should consider travel insurance options by assessing the possible risks in the area you are traveling, such as food and water safety, crime rates, weather risks and now, COVID-19 infection rates.

Safety Tips for Traveling in Mexico

Travel insurance will keep your covered in the event of an emergency, but it’s also a good idea to take precautions that could eliminate risks in the first place.

  • Water and food:The CDC recommends avoiding tap and well water, including ice from either source. Try to always drink from sealed bottled water, hot tea or coffee, carbonated drinks or pasteurized milk. Additionally, you should only consume foods that have been properly cooked and served hot. Room temperature food items should be avoided.

  • Alcohol:You should consume alcohol in moderation, especially when traveling, because it may affect your ability to stay vigilant and identify threats. In some cases, alcohol consumption can impact your Mexico travel insurance policy and prevent you from filing a claim.

  • Packing:When planning your trip, look at the area you’re going to and the weather. Pack light with only what you will need, and leave expensive items at home if possible. Limiting unnecessary items will help mitigate loss.

  • Crime: Be aware of your surroundings in crowded public places, and try not to look like a tourist by walking with purpose instead of wandering around looking lost. Carry your cards and cash discreetly and in a hard-to-reachplace,such as a money belt worn beneath your clothes.

  • Learn Spanish:Learning Spanish will not only be helpful, but it will also make you less susceptible to scams that target foreigners.
