Tips for Minimizing Office Hazards

Commercial insuranceAs far as workplaces go, offices are generally among the safest. But why not make them even safer with a bit of extra effort? A safer workplace gives your employees a greater opportunity to stay well and also helps maximize their productivity. Not to mention, the less workers compensation claims filed, the less you generally have to pay for coverage. Let’s get started.

First, walk around the office looking for any possible hazards. Cords and wires should not be left in walkways, but rather coiled neatly against the walls. Any loose carpeting or other minor maintenance issues should be repaired as soon as possible. When performing your own repairs, always use a sturdy ladder rather than climbing on desks or chairs. Drawers, particularly large file cabinet drawers, should be closed when not it use to prevent tripping.

Fire hazards present one of the most common dangers in offices, but are also very easy to prevent. Do not allow open flame candles. Rather, encourage your employees to bring candle warmers or electric candles, so long as they remember to turn off such electrical devices before leaving the office. Fire extinguishers should be located throughout the office and employees should be taught how to use them. Plan a fire drill twice per year to go over escape routes and protocols.

If a spill or leak occurs, clearly mark the area to prevent employees from slipping. You can also hang signs displaying office rules (such as “no running” or “smoke only in designated outdoor areas”) to further enhance employee safety.
