Understanding Travel Insurance in Mexico

Planning a trip to Mexico may seem like a relatively simple venture. But like any significant financial commitment, travelers preparing to vacation in Mexico must consider ways to protect their investment, such as through adequate insurance.

For 30 years, the agents at Pan American Insurance have made it an integral part of their mission to help travelers heading south of the border by building suitable travel insurance policies.

What Is Travel Insurance?
Travel insurance is a critical type of coverage that can be customized and tailored to suit your specific trip. Regardless of how meticulously planned your vacation may be, certain aspects of it may be beyond your control. Fortunately, an optimal travel insurance policy can provide a broad safety net across potential incidents or unforeseen circumstances, including financial assistance and reimbursement for certain losses and damages.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?
When considering a travel insurance policy ahead of your trip to Mexico, you must account for several inherent exposures that could hinder or even completely ruin your vacation. Most adequate travel insurance policies will include coverage for the following:

  • Delays—If your flights are delayed, this coverage may be able to pay for various resulting expenses, such as the following:
    • Hotel accommodations
    • Meals
    • Personal care items
    • Transportation
  • Interruptions—If an incident, such as you or a traveling companion becoming ill, forces you to end your vacation early, this coverage can provide financial assistance in the following ways:
    • Reimbursement for unused, prepaid, nonrefundable purchases and expenses, such as flights, hotel accommodations and other activities booked in advance
    • Expenses arising from having to return home early, such as additional costs incurred by having to change your flight or book a new one
  • Cancellation—This coverage can reimburse you for nonrefundable expenses in the event your trip is canceled, such as for the following reasons:
    • An injury or unforeseen medical condition makes you or a traveling companion unable to make the trip
    • The death of a traveling companion, a nontraveling family member or yourself
    • Severe weather events rendering travel services inoperable
    • Natural disasters occurring either at your place of departure or destination
    • Legal obligation (e.g., jury duty, court order, subpoena)

In addition to standard trip cancellation coverage, policyholders may be able to enhance their insurance with “cancel for any reason” coverage. For an additional cost, you will be able to recoup at least some of your travel expenses regardless of the cause of your cancelation.

What Other Insurance Do I Need for My Trip?
In addition to a suitable travel insurance policy, travelers should consider further protection. In many cases, the following types of coverage may be advisable:

  • Medical—Your standard health insurance may not be applicable in Mexico. Fortunately, travel medical insurance can help you receive the care or treatment you may need.
  • Medical evacuation—During your trip, severe illnesses or injuries may make it necessary for you to have reliable transportation to the nearest suitable medical facility. This coverage may be particularly important for travelers with underlying health conditions.
  • Baggage—If your possessions, such as cameras, wallets or handbags, are stolen, this coverage can provide critical financial assistance.

Build the Right Benefits Package
When making your travel plans for lodging, local transportation and any other planned excursions, you should expect that things can go wrong. Without suitable travel insurance and other necessary coverages, even slight mishaps could have significant ramifications for your trip and your finances.
